Thank you for attending Los Angeles Advisors in Philanthropy’s event on How Stories Can Weave a Tale of Life Well Spent at the Luxe Sunset Hotel on November 29th. Special thanks to Align, Whittier Trust and Fidelity for their vision, leadership and support of this truly special event.

Led by Chris Gebhardt and built upon by Mike McGalliard, Lisa Coppedge, and Jennifer Kenning, enlightened us on how stories can change the world. Below, please find the books Chris mentioned in his presentation and the 3 takeaways we hope you consider personally and within your business.

Key Takeaways:

1. Stories create group fiction; a shared, imagined reality which forms perception.
2. We have to share a story and connect with others to believe it.
3. Facts don't persuade but instead community pushes us to take action

Bonus Thought: When Oxytocin is released, we are more apt to give

ACTION to consider: Challenge yourself to LISTEN to someone else's story and consider their viewpoint. Whether it be a client, friend, or family member, we all benefit from the magic of opening our own mind to a new story.

Books:
Sapiens, Yuval Harari
The Moral Molecule, Paul Zak
The Righteous Mind, Jonathan Haidt
Tribe: On Homecoming and Belonging, Sebastian Junger
Thank You for Being Late, Thomas Friedman

Bottom line, we as humans crave community and a sense of connection to craft a story, form a perception and in turn, pull at our heartstrings to allow social impact to occur. With that in mind, we thank you for being part of our community yesterday, being part of our story, and hopefully crafting a narrative for your clients, donors and in turn Los Angeles as a whole.

We look forward to seeing you at future events, and thank you for your participation in Tuesday's event. And for the good work you do in Los Angeles the city we all want to live in. If you’re interested in becoming a member, we would love to have you!

We hope you will join us on January 23rd at 12pm at California Community Foundation for our Ed Seminar on PRIs (Program Related Investments) with Jane Peebles and Jennifer Kenning.
